Terry Fulmer, dean of the College of Nursing at New York University, examines the critical shortage of nurses that America currently faces. Fulmer discusses the effects of the healthcare reform debate on the nursing and medical fields. She also explains how other countries have successfully utilized nurses in expanded roles, which could be a good model for the United States to follow. Nurse practitioners also stand to be valuable resources. As she says, "The opportunity is to capture the nurse practitioner as a resource for healthcare reform in long-term care, nursing homes, assisted living and communities for older adults."
