Digital Storytelling Tips from AEJMC

blogs - sandy

aejmcClear, concise writing is vital to good storytelling, but in the digital age, people expect more. They expect their stories to be interactive, visually stimulating and as easy as possible to understand. This morning, experts from around the country got together to share their digital storytelling skills at the Association for Education in Journalism and Mass Communication (AEJMC) conference in Denver and here is what they had to say:

Carol Reese Dykers from Salem College, Cheryl Mann Bacon from Abilene, Toni Albertson from Mt. San Antonio College and others talked about digital storytelling and here are some highlights!

A well-reported, researched story must exist for digital stories to be good.

Voiceless text and slapping on photos and videos does not make it good multimedia!

Technology helps you tell a story for different audiences and achieve different goals.

Affordable tools for the tradigital reporter:

Panasonic Lumix cameras,
Flip cams
Olympus digital voice recorder

Sites use old pictures for current stories. Doing this can distort the reader's perception of facts!

If instructors encourage students to get out of the classroom and get into the real world, they will come back with great pics and videos!

A course blog is one of the easy ways to technologically transition and allows students to interact with each other. Check out this course blog! http://blogs.acu.edu/commlaw

Getting students to undertake big multimedia productions while at school makes them more competitive in the job market.

Audio slideshows are a great way to showcase stories – NYT & NPR have good examples!

Equipment list to make audio slide show:

Zoom mic
Headphones
Camera
Tripod

Free alternatives to Photoshop!

Gimp
Picasso

Soundslide plus is a program created by journalist for audio slide shows - and it's affordable!

The most important thing is the story and how well you communicate that to the human being on the other side of the computer.

Good exercise - create a team that covers an event. Some write, others monitor social networks and blogs - and update throughout the day.

Journalists can't be everywhere, so learn to use crowdsourcing to write a better story.

Ustream is a good tool to stream live.

Moviemaker is a good, free tool to edit videos for pc users.
