 The University of Iowa is a public research university that is considered a 'public ivy.' The university has eleven colleges granting undergraduate, graduate and professional degrees. More than 30,000 students enroll at Iowa each year. Established in 1847, Iowa was the first U.S. public university to admit men and women on an equal basis and the first in higher education in the nation to accept creative work in theater, writting, music and art as theses for advanced degrees. It also established the first law school and first educational station west of the Mississippi, broadcast the world's first educational television programs, and developed and continues to hold preeminence in educational testing.
