A New Level of Journalism |
|
The Internet has taken journalism to a new level, vastly expanding content, accessibility and reach. On the downside, the mainstream media as we've come to know it, has suffered because old-line newspapers are suffering according to historical measures of success - circulation, mainly. Since circulation is the basis for advertising rates and revenues, as circulation numbers have decreased the industry has suffered. Broadcast news organizations have suffered in similar ways as media consumers have fragmented their media consumption according to both their schedules and personal interests and even opinions. If someone doesn't have the time to sit in front of the TV at 6 p.m. for the nightly news, they may get it later on a web site. If they don't buy a newspaper, they can still access the news on the Internet. And if they don't like what they see on CNN, they can switch to Fox News, or some other media outlet that better reflects their tastes. In short, the mainstream media's dominance is being weakened by a vast array of choices. That said, the new media is actually bringing with it an explosion of new information. The number of bloggers alone has created a force of citizen journalists that actually competes with mainstream media journalists. The future of journalism is going to be on new information platforms and will continue to be fragmented according to demographics and other measures. - Tim O'Brien
