References and Resources

The following are some good "point of reference " sites that you can use to research and formulate your arguements. If you have any other links you think we should include, please send them to This e-mail address is being protected from spambots. You need JavaScript enabled to view it .

Healthcare Related:

Hospital.com

Hospital.com is a free informational resource to both the consumer and professional public. It offers information on hospitals around the country (soon to be around the world), as well as information on a variety of related topics in the health care field

Current News:

For the best daily summary of news, buzz and analysis items on the media, look to www.poynter.org/medianews. It compiles ombudsman columns, newspaper press critic stories and individual breaking stories in a "must-read" fashion for all journalists. It also has a feedback column and a lengthy list of "media people" (i.e., media and political critics), one of whom we especially find interesting is ...

... Alan Mutter, whose site is www.newsosaur.blogspot.com. He calls his column "Reflections of a Newsosaur," as he "fears our news gathering companies are stumbling to extinction." Mutter held top editing jobs at the Chicago Sun-Times and San Francisco Chronicle, but he also has been CEO of Internet and software companies. This means he can read a balance sheet ... and his knowledge of the business end of newspaper companies as well as their editorial products makes him unusual ... and most valuable to read.

Another electronic columnist worth calling up is Mickey Kaus, at www.kausfiles.com. Kaus, who writes for Slate, turns out "a mostly political weblog" though he often mentions media coverage. He's a Democrat but is frequently more critical of the Dems than the Republicans are ... such as his "Obama Gaffe-O-The-Day" ... in other words, he's thoughtful and he's his own guy. Moreover, his column is very frequently updated and full of witty retorts and back-and-forth with his readers ... and he offers startling, sophisticated insights and ruminations you don't see much any other place.

For a Republican-oriented political news site, but with material from all sides, we like www.realclearpolitics.com. This rounds up, brilliantly and thoroughly, a sizable amount of political articles every day along with editorials, blogs, poll-tracking and so on. It's the handiest way of keeping up with American politics.

For a more scholarly approach to the media, the Center for Media and Public Affairs is one of the most fair-minded of the think tanks in Washington. Call it up at www.cmpa.com. Its research is excellent; it's perhaps best known for its measurements of favorable and unfavorable treatment of candidates by the media
